Printmaking and mixed media

Chaotic dreams

The series Chaotic dreams is created by combining techniques of printing, painting and drawing. Process starts by defining the format, positioning the ultramarine and ocher within the format, and continuing with linocut printing process.  Finally,  ink drawing redefines shapes and the golden layer establishes the focal point. Coincidence is involved as result of spatial organisation, not a process itself.
The printmaking process includes acrylic paint with matrixes printed on one another. Linocut technique treated that way enables different relation between positive and negative, kind of arabesque based on lines, shapes and contrast. Chaos is formed because of shapes that lose meaning in irregular sequencing and overlapping. As the positive and negative shapes converge, the recognition of motives becomes so difficult.

There is impression of accumulation in which chaos and order are mixed. Format itself conditions kind of order through separation and orientation towards the centre or the poles.
Outlined shapes form characters that may be associated with motives taken from the mythologies, but mostly they are made up. Some of them may be called Birdlike, Minotaur, Orant or Three-headed. Characters are outlined and less defined in anatomical details. Relation between characters can be identified through the dream and the dreamer.  Selection of such motives may be reminiscence of forgotten cultural context.
Technique includes 200 g/m2 paper, acrylic paint and golden acrylic spray.

Sacra conversazione

Sacra conversazione is a theme known in Renaissance art that allows nonverbal communication among saints. Particular artwork includes similar composition based on formal balance and 3 characters that seem to share eye contact. Characters can be defined as Birdlike (right), Humanlike (centre) and Minotaur (left). They may also remind of statues because of lack of recognisable anatomical details and textures made of overlapped linocut matrixes. Birdlike and Minotaur seem to be emotionless and static, therefore Humanlike looks frozen in pain.
Artwork also belongs to the series Chaotic dreams that is created by combining techniques of printing, painting and drawing through use of linocut printing process, acrylic paint, ink drawing and golden layer that defines background and “outlines” the main character.
Division between sky and ground is defined by colours such as ochre, brown and red in lower part of the format and blue in upper part.

Dream catcher

Dream-catcher "organizes" chaos within the format through the positioning geometrical shapes of circle and square. Composition may appear as abstract until recognizing of “hidden” images such as Birdlike and Minotaur. Ultramarine and blue tints indicate dream or surreal level. Ocher is placed in the center of the composition. Ocher seems to be catcher itself where Birdlike and Minotaur are caught. Golden circle signifies border where dreams are trapped on place dividing dream and the dreamer.
Process started with thicker layer of acrylic painting, then linocut printed by acrylic, and finally redefining ink drawing. Gold was added at the end of the process with a paper stencil in the form of circular outline.

Dreamer

Dreamer combines themes of dreamer and dream-catcher. Dream-catcher "organizes" chaos within the format through the positioning geometrical shapes of circle and square. Dreamer becomes a main motive through its central position and almost circular form. Division of two parts; central almost circular part and rest of the composition is associated with two separated realities – the reality of dreams and the "reality" of Dreamer.
Color has a symbolic function through evocating relations up/down, sky/earth, material/spiritual. Ultramarine and blue tints indicate celestial or surreal level, ocher – level of ground and soil, red-brown picturing characters and decay, and golden signifying light and focus. Use of gold allows illusion of the supernatural or surreal.
